Beginning Wednesday, July 1, the Mansfield Police Department’s public front desk will no longer be staffed overnight.
This decision is the result of eliminating a civilian support position as part of the Town’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget reductions.
Effective July 1, the public front desk will be unstaffed during the following hours:
- Monday through Friday, Midnight to 6 a.m.
- Saturday and Sunday, Midnight to 8 a.m.
These changes affect administrative services only. Officers will continue to patrol the community and respond to emergencies 24 hours a day.
Residents seeking administrative assistance are encouraged to visit the police station during regular front desk hours or leave a message by phone or email. Department staff will respond as soon as possible. Some administrative requests may take longer to process than in the past.
Residents with emergencies who come to the police station overnight should use the emergency call box in the lobby vestibule. The call box connects to the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional 911 District, which can immediately dispatch police, fire or EMS personnel.
For many years, the civilian front desk position has served as the first point of contact for community members visiting the Police Department. This employee also handled a wide range of administrative responsibilities, allowing sworn officers to remain available for patrol. Following the elimination of a supervisory civilian position in this year’s budget, those responsibilities have been redistributed among the remaining staff.
The Department analyzed call volume and walk-in activity when determining the overnight hours that would have the least impact on the public while allowing staff to meet statutory responsibilities and maintain essential public safety services.
“We understand this change may be an inconvenience for some residents, and we appreciate the community’s patience,” said Chief Ronald Sellon. “Our officers and civilian staff remain committed to providing the highest level of service possible with the resources available. This change will not affect our emergency response in any way.”
